Perhaps the most important piece of apparel when it comes to climbing is the type of shoe you decide to use. Since choosing the right shoe it is important to consider the type of climbing you will be doing and the layout of the climb. The two most important aspects to consider are the shape of the shoe and the closure. These two aspects determine your comfort levels and ensure that you remain safe and protected during your climbing activities.

Choosing the Perfect Climbing Shoes

Shoe Shape

Climbing shoes come in a wide variety and each one has a purpose. The shoe you choose should match the type of climbing you plan on participating in.

Flat shoes also known as neutral fits are a great choice for climbing long multi-pitch routes. Additionally, it is also good for climbs that have a lot of cracks.

Curved shoes or moderate fit shoes with more pronounced arcs allow for better precision when directing your weight towards your toe and edges of the shoe. The shape allows you to balance on thin holds that require you to balance on your toes or edges of your foot.

Shoes with a distinct hook shape, known as aggressive fit, with a prominently downturned toe are good for overhanging sections that allow you to push your toes forward and balance your weight on your big toe.

Footwear Closure

The way your footwear is secure is also an important aspect to consider when choosing climbing footwear. It determines the versatility and comfort levels you will have while climbing.

Lace-ups are the most common choice among climbers as it provides the ability to loosen or tighten the grip when needed depending on the type of climb. It is also beneficial should your feet swell up in the heat, the lace-up allows you to loosen the grip for a more comfortable fit. Lace-ups are great for any type of climbing activity.

Strap-on is also known as hook-and-loop allow you to take them on and off easily. They are perfect for bouldering and gym climbing. They allow you to slip off the shoe between climbs so you can rest your feet.

Slip-on or slippers are a great choice for training purposes. They don’t have the traditional stiff sole and midsole like the other types of footwear allowing your feet to get stronger faster. They are low profile and since they don’t have laces or straps it makes them very useful for fitting them into thin cracks. Once you have decided on the perfect shoe to meet your needs, its time to start climbing! Take note that every shoe has a break-in period so it may take some time to get used to a new pair, but once they are broken in they should be comfortable, flexible and the perfect match for the type of climbing you plan on participating in.
